In this memorable scene from The Chosen, Jesus calls Matthew, a tax collector whose life had placed him on the margins of his own society. Tax collectors in the Roman world were often despised by their fellow Jews because they worked for the occupying authorities and were associated with greed and corruption. Yet Jesus looks beyond Matthew’s reputation and speaks a simple but life-changing invitation: “Follow me.”
As Matthew sits at his tax booth, surrounded by coins and records of his work, Jesus approaches and calls him to leave everything behind. Without hesitation, Matthew rises and follows Him. In that single moment, his identity shifts from a rejected tax collector to a disciple who will one day become the author of a Gospel.
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
Matthew 9:9
This powerful moment reminds us that Jesus does not call people based on their past or their reputation. He sees the heart and invites ordinary, imperfect people into His purpose. Matthew’s story is a testimony of grace: no life is beyond the reach of Christ’s transforming call.
As you watch this scene, reflect on the simplicity of Jesus’ invitation. His call still echoes today, inviting each of us to leave behind what holds us back and step into a new life of following Him.
